He loved Israel so dearly, and they just wouldn't listen, they loved their blindness, they loved their sin too much, so they hated Isaiah and would eventually martyr him. Isaiah loved them and told them what was going to happen to them if they continued down their paths; they wouldn't listen, and would come to know more pain than they had to know, and a captivity that they didn't have to endure.

I see so many of the youth (and for that matter the adults) of Wewahitchka and my heart breaks. I see so much utter blindness. I feel as though I'm gone though multiple stages of emotional trauma; from anger, to hurt, to acceptance, to fighting, to heart ache and so on... I have the cure for their souls in my hands and they refuse to take it. Jesus is right there and they refuse to look up. So many (by their actions) are saying, 'I choose to die rather than give myself to Christ'... I've shed too many tears to count, I see a generation and a people bent on killing itself, a generation and a people I love so dearly, and I've come to the two thing I've started with...

"If I be lifted up I'll draw all men unto Me"
“Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.”

God... Trade your ashes, sin, Hell and isolation from God for His glory, righteousness, Heaven, and eternity with Him... This world isn't worth it... font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">I am called to live in such a perfect relationship with God that my life produces a yearning for God in the lives of others, not admiration for myself." - O. Chambers

This is my prayer, and in all honesty should be every Christians prayer... 'God help me with "X" sin' is good, but the better prayer is 'God make me more like you, bring me closer to You every day and in every detail of myself.' 'God show me what you want me to do with my life' is good, but the better prayer is 'God make me more like you, bring me closer to You every day and in every detail of myself.' Etc.

The point is, as our closeness and relationship with God grows and there is less and less distance between us and God the other issues seem to work themselves out of our lives. All sin and moral deficiency is a branch from this one root, a lack of nearness to God. Now it is fine and good to pray for specific things, but let the greater prayer of your heart not be 'God make me not like this,' instead let the heart of your prayer (both in victory and failure) be 'Jesus make be more like You to the finest detail, bring me closer to You!'

Son Light is the greatest disinfectant, get close to Him and allow your life to glorify Him.

Matthew 5:20, 6:5-18 Small Group Notes (Prayer and Fasting)

Matthew 5:20,6:5-18

The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is, in effect – Narrow all your interest until the attitude of mind and heart and body is concentration on Jesus Christ. - Oswald Chambers

A text without a context is a pretext…

V20 – Written in the context of twisting the Law… They (like lawyers) followed the letter of the law but forgot its spirit and purpose, a heart change not behavioral adjustments, get the heart right and actions will follow… “Our righteousness, then--if it is to contrast with the outward and formal righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees--must be inward, vital, spiritual.” … This was no new doctrine (Ro 2:28, 29; 9:6; Php 3:3). But our Lord's teaching here stretches beyond the present scene, to that everlasting stage of the kingdom, where without "purity of heart" none "shall see God." The main point is to check your heart in all you do…

In Matthew 6:1-4 it tells us to give to others, not in a way to be noticed by men, but quietly that God may receive the glory. So here we’re seeing we need to do good and for the right reasons. Then we come to verse 5…

V5 – “When you pray” notice it doesn’t say, ‘if you pray.’ It’s Jesus’ desire that you have an active prayer life… It’s very clearly saying not to pray in a way that says, ‘look at how holy I am,’ but is it saying that no prayer could be prayed in public?

V6 – “Inner room” = Storeroom… In the first century, most rooms within a house didn’t have doors, so unlike most of the rooms in the house it had a door that could be closed… So in prayer get alone with God, just you and Him…

Jesus is encouraging this for many reasons; helps you focus, allows you to be totally honest without thinking about what others may think, there’s no one else in the room to impress so it strips away pretenses, and God loves to reward things done in secret meant only for God’s ears, etc…

There are a lot of examples of this “Inner room” prayer; (Jesus) Mark 1:35, 7:33, 8:23, (Peter) Acts 9:40, (Elijah) 1 Kings 17:19, (Elisha) 2 Kings 4:33… but there are countless examples of public prayer to (the Lord’s Prayer itself was a public prayer)

“It is the retiring character of true prayer which is here taught.” The main point isn’t that we shouldn’t pray in public, only that our hearts need to be right when we do.

V7 – This is delusional… Pagans would name off all the gods they knew hoping that by repetition they would respond with a ‘yes’ to their needs… This method of heathen devotion is still observed by Hindu and Islamic devotees…

Jesus wasn’t condemning long prayers, or waiting in prayer, but only meaningless, mindless verbiage in prayer… praying much, and using at times the same words, is not here condemned, but don’t think that the more God hears you say your need means He’s more likely to meet the need…

V8 – Prayer in some ways is more about you than God. He already knows all that you need, you’re not giving Him new information when you’re praying… so what are you doing then when you’re praying?

You’re talking to God, you are listening to God. Good relationships require communication… When you’re giving Him your needs and you’re expressing your trust in Him and allowing God to move in the situation (James 4:3)… You’re being obedient to God, etc…

V9 – “Father… Heaven.” Here we express His nearness to us; in the latter, His distance from us… The first three petitions have to do exclusively with God: "Thy name be hallowed"--"Thy kingdom come"--"Thy will be done." And they occur in a descending scale--from Himself down to the manifestation of Himself in His kingdom; and from His kingdom to the entire subjection of its subjects, or the complete doing of His will. The remaining four petitions have to do with OURSELVES: "Give us our daily bread"--"Forgive us our debts"--"Lead us not into temptation"--"Deliver us from evil." But these latter petitions occur in an ascending scale--from the bodily wants of every day up to our final deliverance from all evil.

When you’re talking to God, you need to give Him the glory due Him (as much as we can in this present world)

A side note – You don’t need to use the Lord’s Prayer every time you pray. There is “no example of its actual use, or express quotation of its phraseology, occurs in the sequel of the New Testament, we are to guard against a superstitious use of it.”

V10 – “The kingdom of God is that moral and spiritual kingdom which the God of grace is setting up in this fallen world, whose subjects consist of as many as have been brought into hearty subjection to His gracious scepter (i.e. Christians), and of which His Son Jesus is the glorious Head.”

"Thy kingdom come," it irresistibly stretches the wings of its faith, and longing, and joyous expectation out to the final and glorious consummation of the kingdom of God. (The Blessed Hope of someday seeing Him in Heaven…)

"Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven"--would then bring us back to this present state of imperfection… We’re not in heaven (hold your shock) so His Kingdom hasn’t fully enveloped the earth, so we pray that God’s love and Will would be more fully realized in the world around us…

V11 – “Among commentators, there was early shown an inclination to understand this as a prayer for the heavenly bread, or spiritual nourishment; and in this they have been followed by many superior expositors, even down to our own times. But as this is quite unnatural, so it deprives the Christian of one of the sweetest of his privileges--to cast his bodily wants in this short prayer, by one simple petition, upon his heavenly Father.”

Basically God cares about our day-to-day needs and wants to meet them… Also expressed is this; “In limiting our petitions, however, to provision for the day, what a spirit of childlike dependence does the Lord both demand and beget!” We don’t just need to depend on God periodically, but we need to know and live out this truth – every moment we’re alive we’re in total dependency upon God. So say this truth and live this truth…

V12 – In this verse “debts” = sins (it’s the same meaning here)

“God sees His own image reflected in His forgiving children; but to ask God for what we ourselves refuse to men, is to insult Him. So much stress does our Lord put upon this, that immediately after the close of this prayer, it is the one point in it which He comes back upon” (V14-15)

Basically, if you’ve truly committed yourself to God, and been forgiven, you must be able to forgive others that have sin against you. Not that forgiving is easy within ourselves, but it is possible in dependency upon Christ…

V13 – “And… Temptation.” – “There is some difficulty in the form of the petition, as it is certain that God does bring His people--as He did Abraham, and Christ Himself--into circumstances both fitted and designed to try them, or test the strength of their faith.”

“We incline to take it as a prayer against being drawn or sucked, of our own will, into temptation, to which the word here used seems to lend some countenance--"Introduce us not." This view, while it does not put into our mouths a prayer against being tempted--which is more than the divine procedure would seem to warrant--does not, on the other hand, change the sense of the petition into one for support under temptation, which the words will hardly bear; but it gives us a subject for prayer, in regard to temptation, most definite, and of all others most needful.”

"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation"? (Mt 26:41).

It’s one thing to face a trial that refines us, makes us more like Him, and brings honor to Him and His deliverance. It’s another thing to fall to “the flesh” and give into our favorite sins… that’s what He’s telling us to pray against.

“But… evil”—“We can see no good reason for regarding this as but the second half of the sixth petition… The final petition, then, is only rightly grasped when regarded as a prayer for deliverance from all evil of whatever kind--not only from sin, but from all its consequences--fully and finally.”

Recapping the points of the Lord’s Prayer (Red is the prayer, black is the point)

23 Elements of the Lord’s Prayer

Relationship: Our Father Recognition: who is in heaven, Adoration: Hallowed be Your name. Anticipation: Your kingdom come. Consecration: Your will be done,
Universality: On earth Conformity: as it is in heaven.
Supplication: Give us Definiteness: this day Necessity: our daily bread.
Penitence: And forgive us Obligations and Sins: our debts, Forgiveness: as we also have forgiven Love and Mercy: our debtors. Guidance: And do not lead us Protection: (not) into temptation, Salvation: but deliver us Righteousness: from evil. Faith: For Yours is the kingdom Humility: and the power Reverence: and the glory Timelessness: forever. Affirmation: Amen.’

V16 – The Jews when they fasted would put smeared ashes on their faces… As well traditionally Monday and Thursday priests would fast regularly… mosaic law only had one regularly commanded fast (the day of Atonement). After the exile four more were added… They were doing right in fasting but it was not the deed, but reputation for the deed which they sought; and with this view those hypocrites multiplied their fasts… God wants you to fast regularly as He leads you but not to show off…

V17,18 – Basically maintain regular appearance, and don’t make a show of it… as well don’t complain about fasting… And if you do God will bless you and answer your needs as He wills…

Matt 6:1-18 (Giving, Prayer and Fasting) are all spiritual disciplines, and all are meant to honor God, not to be done to receive honor from men. As well if done in the right heart, to honor God, God will richly honor (as a byproduct) those who make these disciplines a part of their lives…

<span style="font-family: Rockwell; But our Lord's teaching here stretches beyond the present scene, to that everlasting stage of the kingdom, where without "purity of heart" none "shall see God."

V1 – First notice the word “Beware,” when God tells you to watch out for something you had better do it… Next take note of the word “righteousness” then read Matthew 5:20 again… One author puts it this way, “God accepts only what is done to Himself.”

When we good, not for God, simply to be noticed we take away glory from Him who deserves glory. All that we have, every ability every blessing, is from God. When we use those gifts to pump ourselves up and not God we miss the point of our blessing… We’re blessed to bless others, God gives to us so that we can give to others… So when we take our lives and blessings to puff ourselves up and not honor God it doesn’t please Him…

V2 – They would literally do this under the pretext of calling the poor to themselves that they could give to them, but God knew there hearts and that it was to have everyone look at them… By doing that they received their reward, peoples praise, a pretty cheap reward compared to what God gives…

God is very clear that we need to give to the poor. (Deut 15:7,8 Matt. 19:21) But we need to give smartly, in a way that’s helping them and not enabling poor choices, and need to give quietly… So how are we to give?

V3 – Have you ever heard the phrase, “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse…” No one in so hungry they could eat a whole horse in one setting. It’s called Hyperbole; you’re exaggerating the point to make the point…

When you give to others, which does want us to do, do it quietly… Some examples; people have given me (Sabian) money secretly to give to others, if it’s a service that people may see just do it and don’t make a big deal over it, etc…

V4 – When you give of yourself, when you love others God will reward you… Rev. 22:12… I would much rather have God’s rewards than mans (V2)… But this is nothing that can be faked God is searching hearts (1 Chron 28:9, Jer 17:10), make sure your heart is true in giving, if it’s not repent and then continue to give…

Giving is a spiritual discipline that is meant to bring Glory to God, do this the right way, with the right heart, and you’ll receive reward that that nothing on this earth can match…

A quick thought...

We're blessed to bless. There is a root of bitterness that comes from "misering" away blessing. Remember the parable of the talents in Matthew 25. God allows blessing to come into our lives, from finances and possessions to love and relationships (this could be an endless list). What we do with that blessing will make all the difference in the fulfillment of our lives.

Do we give to those in need, even when we may not have so much? Do we give when we have a lot? Do we love only when we are loved, or do we love even in the face of hatred? (Matthew 5) Do we only build relationships with those who approach us? Or do we make it a point to build friendships with as many people as possible who touch our lives?

The point is simple. We've all been blessed "according to his[our] own ability..." What are we doing with that blessing? Are we allowing ourselves to be a stream of blessing? Letting God's kindnesses flow through our lives. Or have we dammed up that stream, claiming lordship over blessings that were only meant to pass from our hands to another?

If we desire to go deeper with Christ these are questions we need to ask ourselves. Is God Lord over your blessings, or are they yours to do with as you please? Let this question bug you, then make the right choice, and stand and be amazed at how much more God blesses you (I'm not really even talking about money), and how much closer you get to Him!

Blessing is just as much a test of faith as hardship, how you choose to handle it matters...

Matthew 5:20, 38-48 Small Group Notes (Love Like Jesus)

Matthew 5:20,38-48

The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is, in effect – narrow all your interest until the attitude of mind and heart and body is concentration on Jesus Christ. - Oswald Chambers
A text without a context is a pretext…

V20 – Written in the context of twisting the Law… They (like lawyers) followed the letter of the law but forgot its spirit and purpose - a heart change, not behavioral adjustments, get the heart right and actions will follow… “Our righteousness, then--if it is to contrast with the outward and formal righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees--must be inward, vital, spiritual.” … This was no new doctrine (Ro 2:28, 29; 9:6; Php 3:3). But our Lord's teaching here stretches beyond the present scene, to that everlasting stage of the kingdom, where without "purity of heart" none "shall see God."

Probably one of the harder truths of the bible, it goes against our nature… Nonresistance is a major theme here. Why do you think revenge movies are so popular? It appeals to our base fleshly desires. Someone does us wrong, or even a perceived wrong and we want revenge…

V38, 39a – This was the ministry and life of Jesus. Before the cross, this was our fate, but at the cross He absorbed this justice. An eye for an eye is appealing when we’ve been wronged, but what about when we wrong others?

• So where is the balance? We want grace when we fail, but we want justice when we’re wronged. This is the very reason Jesus came, to take on the “eye for an eye;” not that there would be no punishment (that would make God unjust), but that He would take the punishment for us.
• To know grace you must be able to extend that same grace to others, and this is hard.
• Here are some examples of revenge: Jezebel (1 Kings 19:2), Ahab (1 Kings 22:27), Haman (Esther 3:6), Philistines (Eze. 25:15), Herodias (Matt. 14:8), Nazarenes (Luke 4:29), Sanhedrin (Acts 5:33), Jews (Acts 23:12) [Read the contexts to get the point].

V39b – This verse goes two ways; first, the phrase “resist” means a court of law. It’s speaking to us to avoid suing people. The strikes mentioned here are more of an insult than a violent act. So basically it’s saying, ‘It’s better to be insulted twice than to be taken to court.’

• The bible is not silent about the subject of revenge; Lev. 19:18, Prov. 20:22, Prov. 24:29, Romans 12:17, 1 Peter 3:9.
• So instead of revenge being the model of how we are to live, this is the model Christ believes in; 1 Cor. 13:(v4) 7.

The second thing we see in this verse is that Jesus modeled how we are to live here. He was bruised and slapped for our transgressions, both literally and figuratively. If we’re no greater that Jesus then we should live out 1 Cor. 13:7…

V40 – This is referencing Exodus 22:26-27 and again driving home the above point. Also notice again Jesus’ example for us on the cross - He had His clothing taken from Him… I know this is a hard truth, but it’s the heart God desires in us.

V41 – Some background we need to know that helps us to better understand this verse is this - there was “the practice of the Romans and some Eastern nations, who, when government dispatches had to be forwarded, obliged the people not only to furnish horses and carriages, but to give personal attendance, often at great inconvenience, when required. But the thing here demanded is a readiness to submit to unreasonable demands of whatever kind, rather than raise quarrels, with all the evils resulting from them. What follows is a beautiful extension of this precept.”

• Notice that when Jesus had carried the cross as far as He could take it (Mark 15:21) Simon was pressed into service to help Jesus carry the cross.
• God’s desire in us is that we would have unlimited service even in the face of hardship. (1 Peter 4:11)

V42 – Christ has given us so much. He gave us grace when we had nothing to offer Him…are we greater than our master? We should be as generous as possible toward as many people as possible.

• Now don’t think of this as just money, money is implied here, but it’s not overtly stated for a reason. Generosity is more than just money, it’s time, it’s prayer, it’s conversation, it’s can be anything and everything that you can give.
• But there is a balance here. If someone wants money (for example) just to buy drugs, then don’t give to them money, but buy them food. You’re still giving, but you’re giving wisely…

V43 – This idea of “hate your enemy” was not found in the bible, but it was in the Jewish ethic of the day. And we can look down on this, but it’s not too far off the way people operate today, maybe it’s not said, but actions bear them out…

• Girls will seek to destroy other girls that cross them, fighting on youtube is very popular…
• But one question we need to start asking ourselves is this. Who is our real enemy? People or Satan?
• Let us pray that those that seem to be our physical enemies here on earth, prayerfully will become our spiritual brothers and sisters should they turn to Christ…

V44 – So what is God’s command to us? To love even those that hate us. Jesus was the ultimate example of this - ‘while we were yet sinners He died for us. While we hate God, He loved us!’

• The love Jesus is talking about here is not just a passive love… “Usually, the former denotes "complacency in the character" of the person loved; but here it denotes the benign, compassionate outgoings of desire for another's good.”
• In other words, love is not just not wishing them bad, but in a very practical way showing them love…

V45 – “so that… heaven,” If you’ve been forgiven you must be able to forgive. It’s not an easy thing, but here it is very clearly saying, “If you can’t strive to love like Jesus you may not know Jesus…”

• “for He… unrighteous.” We’ve been on both sides of that equation, if we know Christ. Are you not glad that God showed mercy on you in your unrighteousness?!? Who are we not to show the same grace?

V46-47 – It’s not hard to love those that love you. I like how one guys says it, "In loving those who love you, there is no evidence of superior principle; the worst of men will do this: even a publican will go that length."

• So lets love in a greater way like Jesus, and not just the easy way the world loves.

(Divine Standard)
V48 – This is God’s divine standard, I like how one author says it, “Perfect – or complete, “ Manifestly, our Lord here speaks, not of degrees of excellence, but of the kind of excellence which was to distinguish His disciples and characterize His kingdom.”

• Remember the context of V20 - this is a heart condition, a heart issue. It’s not about the letter of the law, but simply striving in grace to follow His footsteps.
• Gen 17:1, Basically it’s saying, ‘walk like I walk.’
• Imagine a parent walking on the beach leaving footprints in the sand. Now imagine their child walking behind them trying to step only where their parents have stepped. That parent isn’t going to strike them down if they slip up, they’ll pick up their child, dust them off and let them try again. As the child grows and gets bigger they’ll be better able to walk in those footprints.
• This is what God’s talking about. God’s perfect and we’re to strive to walk like Him, if we falter there is mercy, but He’s expecting us as we grow to do better and better until we finally see Him in heaven and are made perfect there!

Final Points
1. Salvation, Do you really know Jesus.
2. We need to show the same grace we’ve been shown.
3. We need to strive to walk more like Jesus every day.

Purity

"We begin by trusting our ignorance and calling it innocence, by trusting our innocence and calling it purity..." Just think of a world that followed the Law of God. A world without lies, adultery, coveting and greed. A world without locks on doors, where parents were given their due respect. A world where God alone was honored, seen as He really is, and reverenced. A world of Sabbaths, a world of rest (Exodus 20)...

Yet we speak of the Law with seeming vitriol, "When I was under the law..." The Law of God within Christian circles, and without, has been given a bad name. Yet read Psalms 119 and you'll see a love for His Law. We've missed the point of the Law. The Law wasn't given to condemn us, but to show us a picture of the world as God desires it. A world of perfect love between man and man; and God and man.

How does something meant to show such beauty become so hated? Our answer is Romans 7:10-11. Our nature, as handed down to us from Adam, is corrupted. We're drawn to sin and enjoy our sin. We wouldn't do it if there wasn't something in us that liked it. Satan plays a cruel trick on us, he allows us to enjoy our sin, but to never be satisfied with the amount of sin we have. So like an addict seeking a new high, we have to do more, and seek it harder to get the same high. The cycle repeats again and again, and leaves us hollow but still craving the thing that kills us. Satan doesn't want us sinning so we can enjoy our sin, he hates us, he wants us sinning solely to break God's Laws and to break our relationship with Jesus. This is how the enemy has turned beauty into horror. By leading us into sin, and away from God, so we are left to face His justice. His Law has never been the problem, it has always been our sin and fallen nature.

This is one thing that makes the rugged device of agony and punishment, called the cross, so beautiful. He, "because He loved," took my justice upon His back... "My sin, Oh, the joy of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!" (It is well with my soul) Oh the greatness and beauty of Jesus and His love for us...

So let us not despise His Law. To love God is to obey God. Not earning our salvation, but living out His grace in its fullness. He has not saved us from drowning in sin only to continue to drown in sin. He has died for "freedom." Free from sin, free to love God. If we falter He'll pick us up, but we're children of the King, let us not live with the pigs. Let us not live so far beneath our means in Him. He's created this entire world, He can give you victory! Allow no daylight between Jesus and you and you'll know victory. Love Jesus, love His Law, Live in His Victory.

Romans 7:7-13 (NLT)

God’s Law Reveals Our Sin
7 Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, “You must not covet.” 8 But sin used this command to arouse all kinds of covetous desires within me! If there were no law, sin would not have that power. 9 At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life, 10 and I died. So I discovered that the law’s commands, which were supposed to bring life, brought spiritual death instead. 11 Sin took advantage of those commands and deceived me; it used the commands to kill me. 12 But still, the law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good.

13 But how can that be? Did the law, which is good, cause my death? Of course not! Sin used what was good to bring about my condemnation to death. So we can see how terrible sin really is. It uses God’s good commands for its own evil purposes.

Sidebar: Here we must address the idea of God's Laws, and man's laws that people mistakenly cloak in what they (many times honestly) believe are God's Laws. A classic example of the latter would be, the length of a woman's hair, or frowning on those that don't dress to the nines for church. I don't want to get too much in the weeds here, it's not the heart of this blog. So I'll just say this; when speaking of the Law be sure to make this distinction without casting judgment and speak in love with one another. Judging others for being judgmental smacks of a little bit of hypocrisy.

Matthew 5:20, 33-37 Small Group Notes (People of our word)

Matthew 5:20, 33-37

But our Lord's teaching here stretches beyond the present scene, to that everlasting stage of the kingdom, where without "purity of heart" none "shall see God."

V33-34a – “But I tell you, Do not swear at all…” The Old Testament allowed oaths (with the exception of those that used the name of God), but here Jesus is teaching the “audience that every oath carries an appeal to God, whether named or not.” Because, as we’ll see later, we have very little control of the world around us, it’s best just not to swear at all…

These are some verse’s that make the point about how serious God is about our word and oaths…

Leviticus 19:12 - Do not say, “I swear to God!”
12 You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.

Numbers 30:2 – Your word is no small thing to God.
2 If a man makes a vow to the LORD, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Deuteronomy 23:21 – Be quick about your word, don’t put things off.
21 “When you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for it would be sin in you, and the LORD your God will surely require it of you.

Matthew 21:28-32 – Not just an Old Testament thing!
28 “But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go work today in the vineyard.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not’; but afterward he regretted it and went. 30 The man came to the second and said the same thing; and he answered, ‘I will, sir’; but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They *said, “The first.” Jesus *said to them, “Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even feel remorse afterward so as to believe him.

V34b-36 – We sometimes think of ourselves as having more control than we do, the fact is, any power we have is on loan from God, and is to be used for His glory. If you have no power over it, don’t swear by it…

James 5:12 – James directly quoted verse 37.
12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

Genesis 22:14-18 – Because God is all-powerful it’s within His prerogative to make oaths. (Heb 6:13-16)
14 Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.”15 Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

Hebrews 6:13-16 – This is why God swears by Himself.
13 For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.” 15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute.

Genesis 28:18-22 – (Jacob’s Latter) Jacob would keep this word.
18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. 19 He called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I take, and will give me food to eat and garments to wear, 21 and I return to my father’s house in safety, then the LORD will be my God. 22 This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”

V37 – So because we’re powerless outside of the power God loans us, Jesus made it simple for us. Be people of your word, mean what you say and say what you mean and you’ll avoid a lot of trouble, and receive reward. (Thompson-Chain 3308/4 is a great study)

Proverbs 21:23 – When we can’t control our tongue we endanger ourselves.
23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue, Guards his soul from troubles.

Genesis 25:33 – Esau lost his birthright because of his lack of control.
33 And Jacob said, “First swear to me”; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.

Joshua 9:19 – The people of Israel lost out on complete control of land because of this lack of control.
19 But all the leaders said to the whole congregation, “We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.

Mark 6:23 – John the Baptist lost his head at the hands of someone that actually liked him because of this lack of control.
23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom.”

Simply let your “Yes be Yes, and your No, No…” and people will respect your word (over time) without swearing. Being a person of your word is a powerful witness for Christ in a world that can’t even trust written contracts!

Mary for Mother's Day

(Sermon notes for Sunday May 8th)

Mr. T's thought's on mother's

For mother’s day, let us have a woman teach us, Mary has some amazing this to teach us! But first something for us kids…

1. Jesus had to submit to authority to…

Luke 2:51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

God subjected himself (was obedient) to His earthly parents, how much more should we do so?

Do you see the effect of His “subjection?” Wowed His mother, grew in "wisdom and stature," and found "favor."

2. Moms are sometimes worriers…

Mark 3:20-21
20And He came home, and the crowd gathered again, to such an extent that they could not even eat a meal. 21When His own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, "He has lost His senses."

Matt 12:46 While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. 47Someone said to Him, "Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You." 48But Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?" 49And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, "Behold My mother and My brothers! 50"For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.

Our mothers worry about us, they see us stretched thin, and naturally worry. The reason mother's worry so much is that they love so much...

Even Mary worried, so you’re not crazy… only turn to the right source when worry does consume you. Paul said, ‘worry about nothing but pray about all things.’

3. Mary was excited about God…

The Magnificat
Luke 1:46 And Mary said:
         "My soul exalts the Lord,
47And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior… etc…

The deepest part of her was on fire for God. She adored God!

Mary’s life always pointed to Jesus, not herself…

I would encourage all of us to be excited about the things of God. If you’re not excited about the things of God, the lives you touch sure won’t be…

4. Mary was thoughtful in her experiences with God.

Luke 1:29
But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was.

Luke 2:51
And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart.
52And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Luke 2:13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14"Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased."
15When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, "Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us." 16So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. 17When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 18And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. 19But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

“ponder” – deep reflective thought

Mary was young and profoundly perceptive. And as she experienced the things of God she really thought about them.

How many times do we have these powerful experiences with God, then just as quickly as it’s over simply move on without doing some deeper evaluation… do we sit and really flesh them out? Do we pray about them and ask, “what about this should I learn and change in my own life…”

5a. Mary had a good idea of the possibilities of her son, and still submitted to his spiritual authority…

John 2
Miracle at Cana
1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." 4And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." 5His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."

Probably in her 40’s at this time… Mary was able to perceive Jesus’ great power before others… mothers know the limitless potential of there children… “woman” actually a tender term (woman at the well, at His death this is what He called Mary)… but he also corrected her, don’t push me before my time…

But in this Word Mary has taught us two things about prayer; one, to be persistent, two, when you pray listen and obediently do as the Lord leads you… (2:5) Live by this… and notice she pushed then submitted…

5b. Mary showed us submission to His will even though she didn’t fully understand…

Luke 1:26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28And coming in, he said to her, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you." 29But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. 30The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31"And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end." 34Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" 35The angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God. 36"And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. 37"For nothing will be impossible with God." 38And Mary said, "Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

“Favored one” – not a matter of her grace, but the daughter (receiver) of grace, she was not chosen on her merit, but His grace…

The first person who heard of a virgin birth questioned it to!

“Bondslave” – her response was that of surrender to His will… do we surrender to the voice of God or fight against it?

You want to be a strong person, learn surrender to God. There’s no strength found in being stiff necked to God.

She submitted even though she didn’t fully understand… we want to know all the details before we submit to anything, and sometimes with God we don’t understand, but if we're faithful in the smaller acts of submission to God He'll show us the bigger things when we're ready...

If we submit and allow God to have His way in our life there is no limit to what God can do through us!

6. Jesus knows the weight a mother’s heart, He knew the weight of Mary’s heart…

Luke 2:34 (25-35) And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, "Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed-- 35and a sword will pierce even your own soul--to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed."

Early on Mary knew Jesus would suffer, no mother wants to see her children suffer… and when our children suffer we feel it don’t we...

John 19:25 Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" 27Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. 28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty." 29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Jesus honored His mother at His death

Jesus knew the weight His mother carried, and the pain she felt, and so in His mercy, just as she witnessed His death she would see His resurrection.

John 20:11 But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb;12and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’”

Walk out this scene in your mind, visualize it…

Her heart was broken, and she mourned for three days, and then Jesus comforted her…

Mother God knows the thing that breaks your heart. Mary’s heart broke at his death, but three days later he filled her heart with joy at the resurrection! If you keep faith, submit to his will completely, and pursue God in prayer, the same God that was there in the heart break, will be there in the healing…

God would teach us today through Mary a few things…

Children submit to authority, it’s in your life for a reason… Adults should do the same as well...

Moms it’s ok to worry, just go to the right place to when dealing with it…

Be excited about God, and the things of God. Let that excitement rub off on the world around you…

Be thoughtful in you experiences with God…

Mothers thank you for seeing all the possibilities in your children…

Submit to His will even though sometimes you didn’t fully understand…

Finally, Jesus is not blind to your needs and knows the weight of a mother’s heart…

Matthew 5:20, 27-32 (Adultery and Divorce)

Matthew 5:20,27-32

But our Lord's teaching here stretches beyond the present scene, to that everlasting stage of the kingdom, where without "purity of heart" none "shall see God."

V27 – “The intention of our Lord here is to contrast His own teaching, more or less, with that of Moses; that is modifying, enlarging, elevating, and fulfilling it… To us it seems as plain as possible that our Lord's one object is to contrast the traditional perversions of the law with the true sense of it…”

V28 – “But I say to you” – Mark the authoritative tone… Christ now gives the true sense, and explains the deep reach, of the commandment.

“Looks” – not a passing glance, but a willful, calculated stare that arouses sexual desire… Martin Luther said, ‘you’re not responsible for the bird that flies over your head but you don’t have to let it build a nest…”

“The expressions, "whosoever looketh," and "looketh upon a woman," seem clearly to extend the range of this commandment to all forms of impurity, and the counsels which follow--as they most certainly were intended for all, whether married or unmarried--seem to confirm this.”

Once again a heart issue, if you’re heart is already being lead away it’s like you’ve already done it.

V29, 30 – Not the only time Jesus said to do this (Matt. 18:8). Jesus wasn’t encouraging self-mutilation; the blind can lust too (Ray Charles was a womanizer), Those without hands can sin, this was hyperbole - basically deal radically with sin.

Self Denial – Romans 6:6, 13:14 (no provision, don’t make allowances for it), Galatians 5:16, Colossians 3:5, 1 Peter 2:11, 4:2

Don’t just see the negatives of these verse; “For as one might put out his eyes without in the least quenching the lust to which they ministered, so, "if thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light," and, when directed by a holy mind, becomes an "instrument of righteousness unto God."

Your hands and eyes can be used for evil, but they can also being glory to God! Sewage and drinking water don’t mix with good results, you want pure water; strive to be pure water for His glory!

V31 – Notice where this teaching comes into play, between anger, lust and being a person of your word… this isn’t coincidence, lust is a major reason for divorce, unresolved anger is as well, and when you marry it’s your word - “let your yes be yes…”

V32 – “But I say to you” – Mark the authoritative tone… Christ now gives the true sense, and explains the deep reach, of the commandment.

Matt. 19:3-12, The thought of the day (by some) was that if a man “finds no favor in his eyes” for his wife, basically for any reason at all; if she was getting old, if she wasn’t a good cook, if he was attracted to someone else he could get a divorce.

Jesus is teaching that a divorce isn’t a simple legal transaction, but it’s a break from the perfect will of God… It’s His desire that whomever you marry, you’ll grow old with…

Now you need to be wise in who you marry, don’t ever marry thinking you can fix someone, make sure they are really in love with God and not just putting on a show to impress you (It's funny how spiritual guys become when they like a girl that goes to church), pray hard about it and really listen to God, etc… but once you say “I do” mean until death do you part…

Sin destroys those relationships closest to us, Husband and Wife…

Matthew 5:20-26 Small Group Notes (Anger)

Matthew 5:20-26

But our Lord's teaching here stretches beyond the present scene, to that everlasting stage of the kingdom, where without "purity of heart" none "shall see God."

V21 – “The intention of our Lord here is to contrast His own teaching, more or less, with that of Moses; that is modifying, enlarging, elevating, and fulfilling it… To us it seems as plain as possible that our Lord's one object is to contrast the traditional perversions of the law with the true sense of it…”

“Liable to the court” – What happened “was this commandment [was] reduced, from a holy law of the heart-searching God, to a mere criminal statute, taking cognizance only of outward actions…”… This was a heart issue not just an action issue (deal with the heart and the rest will follow).

V22 – “But I say to you” – Mark the authoritative tone… Christ now gives the true sense, and explains the deep reach, of the commandment.

Murder doesn’t happen in a vacuum, it start’s with an impulse, with anger. So even if we don’t physically kill someone, in our heart we have look at these words:

Raca – “you good for nothing” – empty headed

Fool (Thompson-Chain 3853) – Atheist, Slander, Mocker of sin, Despising Instruction, Contentious, Gets into and starts fights, Over-confident, Liar, Hypocrite… to call someone a fool is to level a big judgment.

The point is that wrong anger and evil speaking has its consequences. (Eph 4:31, Titus 3:1-2, James 3:6, 4:11, 1 Peter 2:1)

Words Kill – You don’t have to physically kill someone to murder them… People become angry and make the lives of their victims a living Hell. They are physically scared and rumors destroy all their support… Some people fight, Some are strong enough to stand, some run away, and some simply kill themselves… And it’s an evil from the pit of Hell, if Satan can use you to destroy a life early it makes him happy and is less work for him later… don’t be Satan’s tool!

V23, 24 – God doesn’t just leave us with the problem but gives us the antidote, deal with anger quickly and in a godly way, don’t allow it to fester… seek Reconciliation…

“It transports us to the moment when the Israelite, having brought his sacrifice to the court of the Israelites, awaited the instant when the priest would approach to receive it at his hands. He waits with his gift at the rails which separate the place where he stands from the court of the priests, into which his offering will presently be taken, there to be slain by the priest, and by him presented upon the altar of sacrifice." It is at this solemn moment, when about to cast himself upon divine mercy, and seek in his offering a seal of divine forgiveness, that the offerer is supposed, all at once, to remember that some brother has a just cause of complaint against him through breach of this commandment in one or other of the ways just indicated. What then? Is he to say, As soon as I have offered this gift I will go straight to my brother, and make it up with him? Nay; but before another step is taken--even before the offering is presented--this reconciliation is to be sought, though the gift have to be left unoffered before the altar.” Mark 11:25-26

Bad relationships hinder your prayers (1 Peter 3:7)

V25, 26 – These verse are making an illustration from the Roman Law to His Law, in Roman law you could deal with an issue before court and be done with it, the judge wouldn’t have to get involved… If this is known to be wise under human law, then is it not wise to deal with these things before we stand before God at the end of this life! Mark 11:25-26, Eph. 4:31-32

Side Bar – If you want to go deeper into the heart of anger these notes will help.

Notes on Anger:

• Anger at it’s root is always generated in pain somewhere (this doesn’t happen in a vacuum)… when someone is angry with you, you need to first ask, “Where is the pain…” look past the anger and to the pain.
• People are mine fields when it comes to anger, some people have a few mines, and others are filled with mines.
• Different things tick off different people.
• Anger generates anger like a snowball… if it’s broken early the pain doesn’t have to grow.
• Watch for misdirected anger – Angry at school/work, takes it home, kicks the dog, etc…
• Never preach your own anger and say it’s God’s (you may need to talk about it, but never preach it)!

Biblical view of anger (as I best understand it now…)

Not all anger is wrong! Jesus got angry…

• Jesus and the money changers…John 2:13-17, Psalms 69:6-12 (quote from v17)
• Some people believe He did this twice, at the beginning and end of His ministry. I agree with them, but I’m not dogmatic about it…
• Why was He angry? (v14) “He found in the temple…” It wasn’t the general practice of buying animals, or exchanging currency. This served a necessary function, the distance many of these people were traveling was a long and dangerous trip, and taking all the stuff need for temple would have been rough… Jesus was angry about where this was taking place, “in the temple.”
• Can you imagine trying to focus on God in worship with hundreds of sheep and goats making noise in the background? God is particular about worship (read the O.T. laws), and the solace that was to fill the temple was filled with barn noises… His anger came from zeal for God.

You’re allowed and required to be angry, but it must be brought before God and judged in the light of Him and His standards. Your allowed to feel anger but it must be dealt with rightly…

Righteous Anger… Ephesians 4:25-27,31-32 Psalms 4:4-5

• Something’s need to anger us! When God is mocked or blasphemed, when people are hurt… but how do we respond to that anger? We don’t need to overreach, or become violent, hateful, and/or bitter…
• Anger dealt with wrongly eats away at you’re soul. Don’t harbor it (or allow the sun to set on it), but learn to release it in right ways… unresolved anger is the devils workshop!
• Eph. 4:31-32 teaches us how to deal with wrong anger.
• So how did Jesus respond to His right anger? Differently to different people, to those that were broken in heart He was tender (Woman caught in adultery), to the proud and those that knew better He was firm (Pharisees and money changers).

Now two examples of the right way and wrong way to deal with anger, Joseph and Jonah.

Joseph… Genesis 37-50 (50:15-21) Recount the story…

• For 20 years he had been separated from his family because of his brothers hatred for him… at his fathers death they feared retribution, he forgave them and saw God’s hand in it all. (These brothers had sold him into slavery…)

• Jonah… Jonah 1-4 (4:10-11) Read and Recount the story…

• The people of Nineveh were evil and had done a lot of harm to Israel. God sent Jonah to preach to them to repent, he didn’t want to because he hated them. So he ran… big fish ate him… after three days finally relented and did what God told him to do. The people repented and God didn’t destroy them and Jonah was angry… God gave him a few object lessons of His mercy and he still didn’t get it.
• It was mercy and grace that allowed Jonah to live when he turned his back on God’s calling because of hatred, it was mercy and grace that allowed him survive the fish. Yet he couldn’t find it in his heart to extent that same mercy and grace to others… This is why we can’t hold onto anger!

• Read – Mark 11:25-26, Eph. 4:31-32 (You must know grace to give it, Do you know His grace and salvation?)

Matthew 5:13-20 Small Group Notes (Light and Salt)

Matthew 5:13-20

The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is, in effect – Narrow all your interest until the attitude of mind and heart and body is concentration on Jesus Christ. - Oswald Chambers

A text without a context is a pretext…

V13 – This follows a teaching on spiritual depth, unless you go deeper with God how can you expect to be a good, preserving (salt) influence… Salt was so important and valuable that Roman military were at points paid in salt… “tasteless (Lost)” – a Christian in name only.

“The character and principles of Christians, brought into close contact with it, are designed to arrest the festering corruption of humanity and season its insipidity.”

The question is not, If a man lose his grace, how shall that grace be restored to him? But… “Since living Christianity is the only "salt of the earth," if men lose that, what else can supply its place?”

V14 – Light from the lamps represented the glory and presence of God in the temple… the very nature of serving God makes you stick out… this doesn’t mean you’re perfect, only striving to be more like Him…

“Let it be observed, too, that while the two figures of salt and sunlight both express the same function of Christians--their blessed influence on their fellow men--they each set this forth under a different aspect. Salt operates internally, in the mass with which it comes in contact; the sunlight operates externally, irradiating all that it reaches.”

“A city that is set on an hill cannot be hidden” --nor can it be supposed to have been so built except to be seen by many eyes.

V15 – Don’t hide the glory of God (and His work in you), but let it out and be a light to draw others to Him… You were built and meant to bring Glory to God, and be for Him, a light to your world.

V16 – The purpose of “good works” is not to earn salvation, but to glorify God… Faith/Salvation, then good works (fruit) is to follow, then glory to God. (Always in that order, don’t get this mixed up)

V17 – Read in context of talking about “good works” honoring God… Just because Jesus came to forgive sin didn’t invalidate the laws (10 Commandments) worth… “fulfill” – means to satisfy, the law in fact was a validation of Christ’s ministry…

Concerning the law, Christ came “to unfold them, to embody them in living form, and to enshrine them in the reverence, affection, and character of men.”

V18 – Jesus is being emphatic about it… “For truly I say to you” – It is the expression manifestly, of supreme legislative authority; and as the subject in connection with which it is uttered is the Moral Law, no higher claim to an authority strictly divine could be advanced… “stroke” – the slightest embellishment of a word… “pass away” – pass from one condition to another.

V19 – Following the commandments of God is no small thing to Him… Don’t try to strip down the commandments to make them easier, or add to them to make them harder… “teaches others to do the same” – referring to the Pharisees and their teaching, as is plain from Mt 5:20, but of course embracing all similar schools and teaching in the Christian Church… “great… heaven” those that teach the word as it is will “be raised to the same position of authority and honor to which they exalt the law.” That’s a cool incentive to ‘bring the word correct.’

But our Lord's teaching here stretches beyond the present scene, to that everlasting stage of the kingdom, where without "purity of heart" none "shall see God."

For a powerful study compare and contrast this verse with the self-righteousness of the Pharisees.

Matthew 5:1-12 Small Group Notes (The Beattitudes)

Matthew 5:1-12

The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is, in effect – Narrow all your interest until the attitude of mind and heart and body is concentration on Jesus Christ. Oswald Chambers

Each of these truths build on each other like rungs on a ladder, and draw you closer to God.

V1 – After the busyness (4:23-25) of His ministry He wanted to sit down and give them the depth of what it mean to truly serve Him.

V2 – There is significances in this being Jesus’ first recorded sermon in Matt, and really if you look at the rest of Jesus’ ministry through the light of these scriptures you can see how these principles connect to the rest of His teachings.

V3 – “Blessed” means more than just happy, but refers to ‘the ultimate well-being and… spiritual joy of those who share in… salvation.’

“poor in spirit” contrasting those that think the are self-sufficient.

“Kingdom of Heaven(A)” the poor in spirit see the world as it really is, not in the blind way the proud see the world.

We cannot be good enough to be saved, we are truly “blessed” when recognize our desperate need of Jesus.

(A) “Already but not yet” Upon the work of Christ the kingdom of heaven is already here, but not yet in it’s full form that will come at the end of days

V4 - When we realize our need (v3) it drives us to a proper response of mourning. (Is. 66:2)

This doesn’t make sense outside a spiritual application. ‘You’ll be blessed if you feel bad because one day you’ll feel better.’ Where is the resolution?

Blessed are those that mourn (there sin and hopelessness without Christ [feel conviction]) because upon confession they’ll be comforted by His grace (salvation)

V5 – (Ps. 37:11) “gentle” referring less to peoples attitudes toward one another, but more so toward God. Humble before God.

Those that are humble before God will be lifted up by God. (James 4:6) Truly knowing God humbles a person.

V6 – “hunger” Lit. ‘deepest cravings’ “satisfied” Lit. ‘shall be saturated’

As we realize our need of Jesus, and as we mourn our sin, and humble ourselves before God, this will drive us to want to be more like God, we’ll hunger for His righteousness, and we will be willing to sacrifice to receive it. He will give it to us.

V7 – This deep hunger for God’s righteousness (v6) has a natural by-product of mercy, not self-righteousness.

As we have experienced His mercy, we’ll be able to give that same mercy to others. (Eph 4:32)

V8 – “heart” the center of your being (mind, will, emotions)

The fulfillment of verse six. As He purifies who we are, it clears our vision and allows us to see Him in a sense. Heaven is the only place we’ll be able to see Him in His clearest to us… (Is. 6)

V9 – (Rom. 12:18) This attitude reflects the character of God.

God’s character becomes so much a part of us, that as Jesus made peace between us and the Father, we to are peacemakers between men, and between men and God by introducing other to Jesus, and we’re known as a child of God.

V10 – “Kingdom of Heaven” a present reality as well as a future hope. What a reward!

At this point Satan can’t stand what you’re doing for the kingdom of God, so you begin to suffer for doing good (Just like Jesus), and you begin to see the fruit of your work, the kingdom of Heaven begins to come down.

V11, 12 – You’re in special company at this point, and not to your glory, but to God’s. To be able to lay down a beautiful crown before God, how awesome.

State of the Youth Address

The State of the Youth (127 Ministries) is Good. It’s hard to believe Me and Melissa have been here coming up on 3 years, and it has been a privilege to serve you guys! Before we look forward we need to take a look back …

• We’ve had some rough patches, respect during services was pretty bad at times, but it is improving…

• The Worship Team has changed hands smoothly, and we’ve got a lot of new faces up here… There’s still room for more up here!

• We gave over $1,400 to STL in 2009, Last year we gave over $2,200, Great job, and this year we will do better than that…

• We’ve seen healings, salvations and baptisms…

• We’ve maintained about 10% collectively of the High School and Middle School, and we can do better…

Our mission last year was simple: We needed Depth and Outreach!

Outreach-

• You guys did a great job reaching out this last year! There are so many new faces this year, it’s awesome…

• I crunched the numbers (and I’m not all about numbers for numbers sake, but these numbers represent souls that have had a chance to hear about and meet God) over the past year we’ve had over 200 different people come through those doors, that’s about half the middle and high school! Keep up the wonderful job.

Depth-

• This is where we struggled! (Revival starts first individually, one vision, then collectively, then awakening…) I need revival!

• Some area’s where we need to grow here is we must live James 1:27, this year we’ll memorize it and prayerfully live it!

• As well we’ve got to learn how to give! STL

• But those are just symptoms of the problem…

So I say all that and I say we are at a good place in our ministry (I say “our” because this isn’t about me, it’s about us), but we’re at a critical place as well, we’ve plateau and in order for us to take that next step in our ministry and lives with God we must do one thing…

Heb. 4:14-16

• If you are wondering how to live a Godly life, how to be deeper in Him, this is all you need to know, it’s all right here.

• V14 Because Jesus has done so so much for us let us hold on to our salvation. Ex.

• V15 Jesus was 100% human on this earth, and was tempted just like us, it is not like Jesus is in heaven and He has no clue what it is to walk in our shoes. Yet He didn’t sin, tempted just like up yet He always chose right. Ex.

• “therefore” = because (cause and effect), So because Jesus was tempted just like and didn’t fail…

• V16 Lets get as close to God as possible, that we would repent when we fail, be close to His mercy and grace, and find help in him when we need it.

• Jesus was 100% human, the reason He didn’t fail was because of His closeness to the Father.

• Genesis 5:21-24 Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

• He got so close to God, God said, you don’t have to die, just come on home… Ex. The secret to depth and a Godly life is simply walking close to Him. We need help every hour of the day…

So if we want to live a life “unstained by this world” we must remain close to Jesus.

This new year as well, something I need to improve on is investing in leaders, this will be a focus in the new year as well.

So this year we need to keep up our outreach, but we need to focus on our depth, and I need to invest in leader better… Simply put this year, we need to get near and experience God, that is my heart with everything we do this year!

So this is where we’re at, we’re at a good place but we need to grow in depth, and leadership, and to continue in outreach. And she just gets me all misty eyed. It's hard to understand how you can love something so much. I can't really even put it into words, maybe it's like an avalanche, it's not one thing but it's the accumulation of a thousand little things and it just overcomes you and you can't even breath because it's just so overwhelming.

These are a few of the little things that God, in His loving kindness, has allowed to fall into my life...

I love watching her learn, you can look into her eyes, as life is happening around her, and see the wheels turning behind her eyes. I love the way she wakes up in the morning, she smiles so big, stretches and farts... and then smiles again (I think she knows what she's doing). I love just holding her on my chest as she sleeps, I feel so much warmth and love and trust. My favorite thing is when I have Melissa on one side of me, and I'm holding Addie on the other side of me and in those moments I feel more loved than I ever imagined I could feel. I love coming home after a hard day and just holding my girls...

I love her eyes, they are the some of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I love her expressions as she's just figuring out how her face works. And I love her personality, it's so awesome, even at this early age seeing who she is peeking out at us.

I guess being a father is like marriage is to me. When I was married it felt so natural, like I'd always been married and I love it (even in the hard moments of married life). Being a father I feel like I've always been a father (even though there are parts of it that scare me to death).

That God was so kind to entrust her to me...

A Jealous God (Wednesday Feb 4th)

Listen to this song... click on to the link to the left (this is not an endorsement of the song, only an example)

That is a woman who’s been hurt, and our thought is that whoever that guy was he deserved it.

I’m going to start and end with Grace, and I’m thankful for His grace, but God is a more complex Deity than just grace and to really understand God in a better way you have to strive to see Him in a bigger picture.

Sometimes when I run into people from my hometown I struggle for conversation past the catching up. And I know what it is, I moved away from home at 18 and really never looked back, and I try to have a good relationship with them but they don’t really know me and I don't really know them now.

• All they know of me is that I like basketball and I’m a preacher. But that’s not all there is to me. I love reading, music, art, some video games, tools, guitar stuff, etc… My interests are varied, and yes God is my total priority, but I'm more than just a preacher…

• So in the same way with God, He’s more than just graceful, but He’s also Just, Feared and Jealous…

Tonight we’re going to talk about our Jealous God. Exodus 20:1-6.

• Our first impulse when we think of Jealousy is pettiness, and it’s strange to think of our God as Jealous because it seems like some wrong human emotion. But lets look into the Word and see why God would be jealous. And see if He’s justified…

• V1-2 God brought them up out of slavery in Egypt. (Plagues, part the sea, walk over on dry ground, hold off the Egyptian army with tornado, drown them in the sea they just walked through) Let us think of all God has done for us…
1. He created us.
2. He continues to give us life in spite of your sin.
3. Died for us to set us free from the slavery of sin. Just as Israel was in Egypt, held captive by evil, God want's to set us free from the evil that would captivate us…
4. Gives us health.
5. Protected us even when we’ve made dumb choices.

• V3 So in the light of God doing all this in love for His people, why would we put another thing before Him in our life. Weather it’s another religion or just another object that takes control of our life. To say to God who’s done all this for us, you get in the backseat, or get out of the car of my life. Do you understand His Jealousy?

• V4-5 Don’t try to capture God in an Image, the reason this matters is that God is bigger than any of His creation, and bigger than anything we can imagine. So to reduce God into a picture is to attempt, knowingly or unknowingly, to diminish God.

• Now today we maybe don’t make images of God, but do we do this… We know God’s word, we know right and wrong, but God’s word is “too hard” so we twist God’s word to mean what we want them to mean??? We are creating God into an image that He isn’t! Don’t make God into anything, find out exactly who He is in His Word. Do you understand His Jealousy?

• Do you know any one hit wonder bands? Most of those bands end up hating their most popular song. Why? Because the band members think of themselves as more than just that one hit song. In the same way God in bigger and brighter than that picture could ever be.

• If the greatest artist in the world created the closest thing in the world to the image of God it would be like a spark in comparison to a 1 million suns. These things diminish the greatness of God, both the images and the words we twist. Do you understand His Jealousy?

• V5-6 Now look at God’s response to these things. Not only does this sin affect you but it affects all those that touch your life. This is not a “generational curse.” Families lived together, so in one home you would have three or four generations. So what God is saying is it’s going effect and hurt all those you touch. And that is not a good place to be in.

• “but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” Matt 18:6

• This is no small thing to God.

• But there’s a positive side in all this. If you choose to place God first in everything, and don’t serve other gods, and don’t twist His word; God will not only bless you but bless your children, and your children's children and your relationships. Everyone you touch will be blessed, don’t you want that to mark your life!

• It’s not a coincident that God put these two commandments first. You do this and all that follows will fall into line in the Ten Commandments.

Quickly turn with me to Exodus 32:1-10. (Paraphrasing)
• V1 Moses is dead, lets make a new god that’s easier to serve.
• V2-4 So they make this Idol with there own hand, and say ‘Not YAWAH, but this cow was the one who saved us from Egypt.’
• Is that any different than saying God didn’t make this world it made itself? Or I don’t need to serve God all I have to do is be a good person to make it to heaven?
• Ignoring God’s truth and picking a “truth” that’s easier to deal with… You can’t just live as you want to live in any sin you please and think you’re cool with God…
• V5 Aaron knew they’d gone too far so he restated things, ‘This is a symbolic worship of God through this calf.’
• He did no better than the people. They broke the first commandment, He broke the second…
• V6-10 God is angry and is about to fulfill His promise through Moses children…
• Moses talks Him down from this, but those that wouldn’t repent died, over 3 thousand, God showed them all grace but some repented and others didn't, and if we don't repent don't expect Grace.

This is no small thing to God.
And this is why Christ died on the Cross, because we’ve broken all these commandments, including the first two, and there is nothing we can do to make it right. And it’s not only Just that God break the windows in our car but that God burn our car to a crisp with us in it.

• But this is the glory of the cross, that God would take the punishment that we deserve on His back, and all we have to do is repent (turn from our sin) and give Him control of our lives and we can be saved…

Knowing we serve a Jealous and Just God brings to greater light the enormity of His Grace, not that He is Unjust in saving us but that in grace and love that He would take our deserved justice on His back... How can we then turn from Him and His Grace and have any hope in this world...

Digging Ditches (Sunday Feb 8th)

There are many here that have and still do have very physical jobs. I wasn’t always a preacher. I’ve been a telemarketer… fast food… door-to-door salesman… manager… janitor… factory work… newspaper press… But my first job might have been the hardest, at 13 I split and stacked would for a summer… A construction owner cleared woods and wanted firewood for the winter.
• This was back breaking work, but it laid the foundation for a warm winter for him.
• Today we’re going to talk about digging ditches, back breaking work that will pay off in the end…

2 Kings 3:10-18
• By the way of context, Ahab (an evil king) had just died and his son Jehoram assumed the throne (he was not as bad as his dad, but he was still evil).

• Now just like in America when leadership changes hands, in the ancient world when leadership changed hands the surrounding nations would test the strength of that leadership. So Moab took there shot and tried to rebel. So the king gets his two buddies and goes off to war but they run out of water, and that’s where we find them here…

• Now there are a lot of points of application that you can find in this portion of scripture, choosing your allies and friends wisely, ways by which we seek God, being in the favor of God, but I want us to focus on verse 16…

• They were in a dire situation they were out of water, and any military person will tell you staying hydrated is a top priority in war. Water among other things is what gave Israel the advantage in the six day war, most of Egypt’s army died not because of bullets, but because of dehydration. So this was a life and death situation.

• And God told them, V16, So they knew it was of the Lord He told them this wasn’t going to be a rainstorm that brings the rain, it’s just going to be there.

• Then early that next morning the enemy is deceived and Israel routs Moab, and they have water for their battle.

So my question is this are we digging ditches, are we digging trenches to receive the blessing and anointing of God? Or when God pours Himself out on us is it like water on a ducks back, it might be refreshing but it doesn’t sink in?

• Me and Melissa have a time keeping plants a live, if others have a green thumb, if there’s a color darker than black that’s the thumb I have. Have you ever not watered a plant so long that the topsoil began to crack?

• What you have to do in order for that soil to soak in the water is pour a little bit of water on it and let it soak in, then a little more, then you can pour a lot on. But if you don’t prepare that soil it’s just going to run off the sides.

• So how is the soil of your heart, do you work on it and prepare it for service? Are we digging ditches, are we digging trenches? And this question applies to us in every way, both collectively as a body, and individually.

We need to ask ourselves a few questions, myself all of us.

• How much time do we spend praying for our services, our church body? Or do just come saying fill me up? And following powerful services do we seek to build on it. Do we study more intently what God dealt with us in that service? I guarantee you if we all started to fall on our faces saying God we need you in our service and body we’d experience God a lot deeper a lot more often. Let us dig trenches!

• Do we seek God on a regular basis outside of these four walls in devotion and prayer? We do this not to punch a clock but to get close to God… Prayer and the Word is a means, the goal is nearness to God... And out of this closeness is going to come your power to reach your friends and family for Christ. You get close to God and you’ll get close to His heart, and His heart breaks for His lost children…

Illustration: The longer I live in the south the more southern my accent will get... You guys are going to rub off on me... Spend time with God and His accent will rub off on you...

Both of these things are very personal things, but you’ll find that the personal always affects those around you… So along with these things we need to look at other ways to dig ditches as a body.

• We have to pour into the structure of the Church. Can you imagine your body without a skeletal system? We’d be nothing but very scary blobs. You are not at this church for no reason. God placed you here, and it’s His desire that you find His place of ministry for you within this body.

• When Jesus came on the scene, He didn’t just make people mad and die on the cross. He established a structure that upon His death, within a little under two weeks His disciples would take the lead in the Faith. 3…12…70…Masses…

• Jesus didn’t wait for the crisis of His death to establish structure. It was in place, and they needed it on the day of Pentecost 3,000 people came to Christ. It would have been utter chaos without the structure Jesus built.

• Imagine if 100 people came to Christ next service? Once you move past the praise God moment what do you do then? Who’s going to mentor them? Who’s going to disciple them? Who’s going to help minister to their kids? How are we going make them best feel a part of the body?

• We pray for revival, and that’s awesome and all good and well. The question is are we ready for revival? If they come through these doors and come to Christ will we fulfill the great commission and make disciples of them?

• Matt 9:37-38 37 Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. "Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest."

• Are you a worker? God is calling you to the harvest. God’s will in a general sense has never been hard to know, the great commission.

• So are you plugging into the structure of the church? Is there a Sunday school class you could help in? Is God leading you to help in children’s church, or youth services or another ministry? Is there a dream that God has placed in your heart, a ministry that we don’t currently have? Is there a deeper commitment that God would have you make? ~

I believe we all want to see God do awesome things in our lives and church. But just like digging physical ditches it takes hard work and commitment, but it’s worth the work, sweat, blood and tears. Will you commit yourself to digging ditches as God leads you?

Why I'm Blogging...

My goal for this blog is two fold. First to post my sermon notes for those that have questions or may have missed a sermon here or there. Second if there is something that strikes me to the point I feel motivated enough to share it I will have a forum to do that.

What my goal is not...
